Spruce View Charolais was established in March of 1984 with the purchase of 6 half French cows. Through the years we slowly progressed to 135 head by purchasing 1 cowherd and numerous other females from dispersions. We concentrated on raising polled genetics since it seemed that is what most of our commercial clientel were after. In 1990, we started breeding a great portion of our herd to red factor sires, after listening to our commercial bull buyers.

We are strictly a 2-year-old bull marketer, since we start calving a little later than the other purebred breeders. We get to hold our yearlings over the extra year to grow them out and develop a bull that we know will work for our buyers. They are not burnt out or pushed. We have approximately 40 - 48 2-year-old bulls annually for sale by private treaty or through our annual sale consignments. We have been members of the North Central Alberta
Charolais Breeders for the past 13 years, marketing both males and females through the annual sales at Nilsson Bros. in Clyde. We have been a guest consignor to The Loewen & guests bull sale at Brooks for nearly 10 years. We have also consigned to various other sales in the past and made many new friendships. We have had the great opportunity to become involved with some great breeders in purchasing into some excellent bulls. Through the use of A.I., and these sires, we have changed our gene pool dramatically and added excellent traits.

We like to attend most of our local rural stock shows. Due to other off farm interests taking up a lot of our time, we do not do the big shows. Our 2 children are actively involved in 4-H which allows them to compete in the
local and district levels. They really enjoy the experience of meeting fellow members and socializing with them at various functions. These exchanges seem to be a highlight for the kids.
